During the beginning of spring leaf litter plays an important role in its environment. As it breaks down it provides essential nutrients for the abundance of plant growth we see in the spring.

Plants are not the only ones who benefit from this natural form of decomposition, many forms of insects and mycelium utilize the material as well.
